Picking the right marketing team can make or break your company. The truth is, marketing can either be easy or complicated and expensive. It depends on who you hire to do it for you. To keep the budget low and control over strategic decisions high, you need a team focused on your goals and working to achieve them.
The following are a few guidelines that all startup founders should understand before hiring a marketing team. You don't have to know the technicalities of marketing, but you need to understand what will work for your business and what will not.
My best piece of advice was to stop trying to find the perfect team. It doesn't exist, and it would be too expensive if it did. There are no absolute formulas for success, and no specific marketing structure guarantees success. There's nothing wrong with trying ideas from outside the box; sometimes, this can lead to more creative and dynamic marketing strategies.
Your marketing channels are the various routes to reach prospective customers. A common mistake is going for the obvious but less than optimal route where you stick to your one or two favorite channels for marketing.
Identify your target audience, and then find out what kind of media they use to get their information. Some of these channels are better for lead generation, others for building a brand and making sales.
It would help find the balance between strategic marketers who plan for longer-range campaigns and tactile marketers who know that the best way to create a lasting customer relationship is through customer touchpoints.
When building a marketing team, you might want to find someone who wants to be more strategic as well. If your marketing team is too small and all of the marketers are focused on tactics, you'll have trouble staying on top of the news and trends, which can hurt your marketing campaigns if you aren't aware of what's going on in your industry or market.
